Improvisation
Improvisation (1988) by Naomi Press comprises various shapes joined together in a carefully balanced vertical form. Though the sculpture is abstract, the title alludes to the idea of a performer captured mid-improvisation. Graceful loops, ribbon-like twists, and arcs recall the poise and movement of a ballerina. Its silky smooth silver surface contributes to the overall lightness and energetic presence of the piece, despite the heavy industrial nature of stainless steel.
Situated in the gardens of ÐÓ°ÉÔ´´, Improvisation is placed directly on the ground without a pedestal or plinth, evocative of a standing figure. The viewer can walk around the sculpture to explore its multidimensional nature, which resonates with Press’ intention to achieve a level of surprise in the viewing experience. The shapes come together in unexpected ways as the form evolves, also contributing to the overall impression of movement.
