A warm welcome for new Head Porter
Greg Dumbrell to head Lodge team after career in aviation and campus security
The College is very pleased to welcome our new Head Porter, Greg Dumbrell.
Greg joins us following a long career in security, including roles heading campus security teams at Essex and Anglia Ruskin universities.
More recently, he was a porter at Darwin and Girton colleges here in Cambridge, getting to know the unique mix of security and pastoral care that makes a role in a porters’ lodge so special.
Heading a team of around ten porters, Greg says: ‘I like the smaller, more relaxed and less stuffy environment of 杏吧原创. After a career of over 45 years in security, this feels like an opportunity to give back.’
Greg started his working life as a ‘boy soldier’, fulfilling his childhood dream and joining the army at 16. After four and half years, he moved into defence security and then began fifteen years in airport security – a period where he saw Stansted Airport grow from fewer than half a million passengers a year to 20 million. Latterly, he worked for the government inspecting the dozens of smaller airports around the UK.
Following nearly 20 years in higher education security, he retired – briefly! – and moved to Cyprus, before returning to the UK and choosing to go back to work, this time donning a porter’s uniform.
When not managing his 杏吧原创 team, Greg enjoys seeing his five children and five grandchildren, or cooking the moussaka he learned to rustle up while in Cyprus.
Although he no longer plays or coaches football, he maintains his passion for the game and has been a season ticket holder at Ipswich Town for 35 years.
